What is Search and Give?
Search and Give is a site where you can help generate donations for the charity or school of your choice, by searching the Internet. You simply sign up, select a charity or school, and use the Search and Give site to search the Web.
You may choose from over 800,000 non-profit organizations with a 501(c) classification or from at least 100,000 public and private schools. For every search from the Search and Give site, your charity or school earns a penny. You may generate a maximum donation of $5 (or 500 searches) per month. Microsoft will then make an annual donation to that charity or school based on collective donations generated through the Search and Give site for that organization. There is no limit to how much an organization can receive from a community of people donating to that cause. However, if the total donations for your chosen organization is less than $10 in twelve months across all contributors, those funds will be re-allocated to the American Red Cross.

How do I donate?
You generate donations by using Search and Give to search the Web. When you are signed in, you will earn one penny for each search (up to 500 per month), which is then donated to your selected charity or school. If you are not signed in, your searches will not generate a donation. TIP: To remain signed in to Search and Give, just check the “save my password” box on the Windows Live ID sign in screen.
Microsoft will make an annual donation to the charity or school you have selected based on the total number of searches you and others have completed.
You have another opportunity to generate donations through playing games on the Live Search Club site. You must be signed in to earn tickets, which can then be donated. After you have earned tickets by playing games, you may go to the Live Search Club prizes page and make a lump sum donation to your charity or school.
-
How much money goes to each organization?
Live Search will donate one penny per search. Every penny makes a difference and the cumulative amount donated from all users adds up quickly. Here's an example:
12 months-100 searches per month
| You |
$12 |
| 10 friends |
$120 |
| 100 friends |
$1,200 |
There is no limit to how much an organization can receive from a community of people donating to that cause. However, if your chosen organization has earned less than $10 in twelve months across all contributors, those funds will be re-allocated to the American Red Cross.
-
How much of my donation goes to my selected organization?
100% of your donations are passed directly on to your selected charity or school. Search and Give is a unique program in that we do not take any deduction for overhead, so your organization will receive all of the Search and Give funds generated from your web searches.
-
How can I track the donations I have generated for my charity or school?
You can view your donation history in your My Account section. Here you'll see the amount of money you have generated and donated based on the number of searches you have performed through Search and Give. You can also see the total number of contributors to your charity or school and total donations raised to date for any organization.
-
Can I switch my selected charity or school at anytime?
Yes, you may select a new charity or school and save your settings under My Contribution Settings. The change will apply to the money you earn going forward. Any donations you made prior to the change will remain with the organization to which you originally donated.
-
What if my charity is no longer available?
If the charity you have selected becomes inactive, we will remove it as your preferred charity. The donations that were designated for that charity will roll over and be donated to the next charity you select. If you do not select a new charity prior to the date of Microsoft's annual donation, JustGive will select a charity that it believes most closely matches the original charity selected, and will allocate the earned donation amount to the new charity.
-
How will I know if my charity has become inactive?
After you sign in, you will see a message that states your previous preferred charity has been disabled and will prompt you to select a new charity. When you search for a new charity on the My Contribution Settings page, only currently active charities will be available for your selection.
-
When will my selected charity or school receive the donation?
Microsoft will make an annual donation to the charity or school you have selected using JustGive (see # 13 of the FAQ below) as our payment processor. Microsoft and JustGive will send each organization a check once a year in June for the funds earned from May 1st to April 30th of the prior 12 months. The amount of Microsoft's donation will be the total contributed by the entire community of people performing searches for that organization, including yourself. The minimum check disbursement amount is $10. If the organization has earned less than $10 in twelve months across all contributors, the funds will be allocated to the American Red Cross.
